Subject: here's the essay

Hi Jonathan,

First, a BIG thank you for the extension on the essay.  I really wanted to be a part of your special issue, but the timetable otherwise would have prevented it.  The extra three weeks made all the difference.

Second, a head's up.  Initially I pitched an idea to you about authors getting paid for their publications.  The piece I've attached has absolutely nothing to do with that.  Instead I developed an essay around the question, "How well do academic journal essays represent the extent of the labor that goes into them."  I hope the shift of focus is okay for you, and for the special section of IJOC you're editing.  I'm not exactly sure what prompted the shift beyond a sense that the question I ended up addressing was more urgent -- plus it seemed to connect better with the section theme.

Finally, the piece is on the longish side -- 3,500 words -- but still within the parameters you set for contributions.  The only bit that's unfinished are the citations, which I'll clean up while you're editing.  And speaking of editing, I welcome your feedback.  That is, in fact, kind of the point of the essay, as you'll see.

Take care, thank you again for your patience, and my best to you and Carrie.  BTW, will I be seeing you at NCA this year?  I can't believe how long it's been since we last crossed paths other than online.
