Hi Jonathan,

You are an excellent, excellent editor!  I say this for two reasons.  First, because you found the essay amid the clutter, and second, because you had the patience not to reject the piece out of hand.  Thank you for your goodwill toward me and the piece, which I will revise according to your suggestions, which aren't radical so much as sensible.  Indeed, after sending the first draft off to you, I began to doubt wether I'd made an argument that would hold water.  It didn't, and you were right to call me on that.  I'm happy to make the more "local" contribution you recommend.
